SUP: Stand Up Paddle Boarding
(yeah, this isn’t me! source)
A few weeks ago after leaving our Wednesday night yoga class, my girlfriend and I saw a guy with very well defined abs loading paddle boards onto his truck. My friend, who is single, spotted the abs right away and decided we needed to talk to him about his boards. Me being very happily married tagged along for support. In the conversation we asked about lessons, if it was hard, the SUP yoga classes and left with a bit of information.
My friend hopped right on board (pun intended!) and wanted to go that weekend. I however, have a slight fear of deep water especially with lakes and oceans. I can be on a boat no problem, but on an itty bitty board with me trying to keep stable, I wasn’t too sure. Sure enough that weekend I get a message saying she’s putting together a group lesson and I needed to go, and thankfully we were out of town so I had to say no! She went a few more times after that, each time inviting me and I was always busy (for real, not just being a chicken!). Last week she messaged asking if I wanted to go boarding instead of yoga, and I said yes! I was nervous all day. She said they give you life jackets, so that helped calm me down but I still didn’t want to fall in! She kept telling me how fun it was, and that there was nothing to worry about, I’d do fine. We went down to Main Beach rentals and rented some boards. It was just the two of us, so she was telling me what to do and how to stand, etc. We went out about 7, and it was just starting to sprinkle which turned out to be nice because it wan’t smoking hot. Jason asked me to bring his GoPro camera to take some “action” video of us out on the water. I started out on my knees and once we got out more into the lake, I stood up. I was super shaky, but once I got up I didn’t move my feet until we got back 1 1/2 hours later! Holy crap were my feet sore!!! It seemed like such a good workout though, cause you use your core the whole time to stabilize. I think one day ti would be good to do a lesson, cause my right shoulder was quite sore for a few days after, apparently that means I was paddling wrong. I should have been using my core MORE instead of my shoulders, maybe this will all come to me as I get out and do it more.
All in all, even being out on the lake, I loved it. I came home and told Jason I wanted my own board!! I think we went at the perfect time, on a great night. It drizzled the whole time, so there weren’t many boats and by the time we went back in we were the only ones on the water and it was like glass. Jason has been trying to convince me to go kayaking with him, saying we will wither get our own or get a double seater and I’ve been nervous about that too. I think all I need to do is give it a try and most likely I’ll love it!!
If you’re local and want to try it, you can find more info here. Maybe one day I’ll get enough balance to feel comfortable trying one of their SUP yoga classes….
